summer trips (part three)

this trip was a short one, but still plenty eventful.

my husband russell was leading worship over the weekend at a college retreat in galveston. my good friend ashley asked if i wanted to go down for one day and night to stay at a bay house, as her husband was teaching at the retreat. a night and day with my best friend and her two kids... the answer was obvious.

so we piled into my car and headed to the beach.

after unloading and getting beach ready we headed over for our first afternoon in the sun and sand. literally 10 seconds after emma ran into the water she began screaming and holding her leg. i knew immediately it was a jellyfish. you probably knew as well based off of the reputation of galveston beaches.

so we went back and searched an unknown pantry for meat tenderizer, and came away with vinegar and a plastic cup which she used to pee in and pour over her leg. both of these last methods seemed to help a bit, yet she was unwilling to get back in the water the rest of the trip more than knee high.

on the way to the beach i knew i was getting low on fuel. the first night i said we needed to go get gas first thing in the morning. and turns out first thing in the morning was too late. as we pulled out of the neighborhood, my car sputtered to a slow and certain stop. yes, i pushed it too far. and why would i even attempt to push it with five kids in the car? i truly don't know. but i did. and my car died.

this was one of the many times on this short trip when i was thankful to be with ashley. being with a good friend makes everything seem better. a call and salvation came fairly quickly in the form of five college girls with a gas tank.

back on the beach for another afternoon and ashley's two kids got sick. all to say we headed home the next afternoon real tired and ready for an early bedtime and quiet houses.

the highlight... the ice cream man brought his truck right up to the beach. my kids screamed at the first moment they heard the music.

it's still legendary with my kids the time i ran into the street screaming and waving so the ice cream man didn't pass up our street. they were 3 at the time. and i'd do it again. don't even think about skipping by us. if i'm going to pay you 3 dollars for a bird with gumball eyes that melts in 20 seconds you better come to me. i'll make a fool of myself for that memory.
