goodbye butterfly

for christmas my cousin sydney had the excellent idea to get abby a butterfly kit. emma likes them too of course, but abby has been the one to pretend to be a rainbow butterfly for many months now. she reeeeally likes butterflies. for the past few weeks we have been checking in as our teeny caterpillars got rapidly bigger and bigger, then formed their crysallis'. we missed the actual emergence, but got to see seven beautiful painted lady butterflies. we only lost one in the process. he got jiggled a little too much when he was in his cocoon.
and today, we opened the top and let them out. they were a little unsure at first, but some were quite friendly and hopped on the girls fingers before flying off. a couple even lingered in the air around us for a moment to say goodbye. it would have been a perfect moment with no tears, except right after this last picture the butterfly left abby's finger and got on emma's, not to return. to understand her sadness and tears about this, you would have had to experience her joy and love for butterflies.
goodbye butterfly.
